Statement by Michael Hyatt: "In 1981 I asked Exene if she'd create the graphics for my 1982 Xerography Calendar. On that first tour I'd noticed that she was constantly creating interesting collages and drawings. I'd been xeroxing some of my photographs and decided to make a calendar of some of my favorite images. I planned also to include birthdates of musicians and other dates of interest. Exene liked the idea and agreed. She then went on to illustrate my '83 and '84 calendars. Here's a few samples of the '84 mail art project. Each calendar page is unique.
Michael Hyatt is a social documentary and street photographer. From 1979 to 1986 he documented the punk, new wave and roots rock scene in Ireland and California. Prominent band he photographed included The Boy Scoutz (Ireland), The Plugz, X, The Blasters & Los Lobos. For 1982 & 1983 he created wall calendars featuring his photographs, dates of interest and graphics by Exene. For 1984 he solicited artists around the world to send mail art with the triple theme Olympic Games (in LA that year), Music & Orwellian Dates (Musicmaster included all 3 themes in his mail art piece). From over 300 responses Michael curated 53 mail art works that were published in the 1984 datebook, with graphics by Exene. Since 2002 he’s been documenting humanitarian aid efforts on the Arizona/Sonora border. His most recent book Along the Migrant Trail – A Borderlands Portrait, published by Frontera Nueva Books in Los Angeles, is a grand prize finalist in the 2020 Eric Hoffer Independent Book Publishing Competition.
